Cats and Christmas Trees

A grand struggle is about to occur. You want a Christmas tree but, your cat(s) won’t leave it alone. The sparkle and shine of a festive tree is an invitation for disaster for any cat. If you are new to cat ownership, be forewarned! If you have struggled with this in the past, embark on this armed with a strategy. Consider the following:

Put your Christmas tree in a room with a door.

Keep decorations away from the lower portion of the tree.

Place double-sided tape on your floor around your tree, be sure it is safe for your type of flooring. Only you will know if this is going to be a deterrant for your cat. It works for some.

Place anything you know your cat won’t walk on, on the floor. Aluminum foil or bubble wrap could work. It’s a compromise, you get your tree but, yoiu have to live with the perimeter on the floor.

There are scented sprays to deterr cats on the market.

Anti-chew spray for the ends of the branches.

Decorate with only safe and non-breakable ornaments.

Do not use tinsel or garland (made of the same material), it is very dangerous if swallowed

Secure any breakable ornaments with twist-ties.

Definitely unplug the lights when you are not watching your cats or leaving the room.

Be sure the light cord is out of reach even when unplugged.

Ensure your tree is secured and very stable; cats have been known to jump into the tree!
