This time of year introduces new items to our homes that can present danger to curious pets. With well-meaning guests bringing gifts and our schedules being hectic keep the following in mind.

Toxic Plants – Mistletoe, Christmas Cactus, Holly/Berries, Poinsettia, Hemlock and Ivy are all toxic and can cause a range of reactions from discomfort and vomiting to death.

Chocolate – Dark chocolates and baker's chocolate contains the highest amount of the harmful chemical. With more chocolate around this time of year be sure it is placed out of reach from your pet. 
Xylitol (a sugar substitute) – used in some of the following products: gum, candy, chewable vitamins, throat lozenges and diabetic products. This can be fatal with only a small amount ingested. This product is becoming more widely used, watch for it!
Grapes and Raisins – can cause acute renal failure (kidney failure). Ingestion of as few as 7 grapes or raisins could cause serious problems.
Decorations – tinsel, ribbon, wrapping paper, ornaments and hooks can all be attractive to pets, may go missing without notice and can cause very serious damage if ingested. Christmas tree water from the reservoir can also cause illness.
